First Spanish Navy frigate updated with broadband satcom

The Spanish Navy has installed a first broadband planet-wide satellite communications (satcom) link on board one of its ships, according to contractor Satlink.

The initial recipient is the F-100-class frigate Cristóbal Colón , but a further system has already been ordered for a second Armada ship, the Spanish company announced on 22 November.

The link was made available through the satellite constellation Inmarsat Global Xpress (GX).

It uses the first high-speed Ka band network with global coverage via Inmarsat satellites 1 to 5, said the director of Satlink’s government unit, Oscar Santidrián.

The onboard system was developed by the Spanish Navy and the link was tested while Cristóbal Colón was dispatched on a deployment earlier in the year with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
